Damage control (maybe)

This is Monkey.  He was rescued from a shelter.  Today he caused a little boy to think twice about discrimination and hatred.

While on a hike in an off leash area we encountered a boy of about seven, who asked what breed of dog Monkey was.  When he learned that Monkey was a pit bull, he screamed, “I hate pit bulls!” with alarmingly strong vehemence and conviction.

The boy had not had a negative experience; he didn’t really know what a pit bull was.  He just knew he hated them.  The boy’s adult guardians came along and seemed open to conversation so we talked and the adults agreed that pit bulls do get a bad rap.

As we talked, the little boy drew closer to Monkey, who stood calmly wagging his tail.  He began to pat the dog with wonder and excitement in his eyes.  Monkey stood there quietly, panting a little and grinning.  The boy exclaimed, “I’m petting a pit bull!’

I don’t know where the little boy got the information to decide in his young mind that he hated pit bulls – clearly not from the adults with him.  I don’t know if Monkey changed his mind about pit bulls.  I just know that today, we met a seven year old boy with hatred in his heart, who when he left us bore a grin as wide as Monkey’s.

Monkey is a beautiful pit bull.
